As the deadline of Millennium Development Goals, the end of 2015, approaching second by second, in front of all human beings stands an urgent need for deliberating the acceleration of achievement as well as the post-2015 development agenda. Therefore, in the last year before the deadline, the MDG is established, for all delegates to explore effective and efficient ways responding to that urgency.
United Nations Environment Program is a specialized agency under ECOSCO, responsible for coordinating United Nations environmental activities. Its activities cover a wide range of issues regarding the atmosphere, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, environmental governance and green economy. As matters like trans-boundary air pollution and international waterways contamination become more frequent, UNEP has been actively involved in formulating guidelines on such issues with global impact.
Among all objectives related to environment issues in MDGs, the protection of biodiversity (objective 7B) is a tough and complex mission. Though the square of protected area increased by 58% since 1990, it is far from enough. A remarkable data shows that only 1.2% of total ocean area is being protected now. Marine biodiversity faces a severe threat and the protection work becomes a great challenge. This time, UNEP will focus on the issue with the topic: The Protection of Marine Biodiversity, to reach a wide range of cover in protecting marine biodiversity.
